“I only complain of my suffering and grief to Allah” (Quran 12:86)
Have you ever felt a pain in life so huge that you wished you didn’t exist?
Lifetime is a roller coaster trip. A person is bound to scream and feel scared through its ups and downs. Being grateful to Allah in good times is easy. However, to remain thankful during distress requires serious self-discipline. Not to mention that this stage comes after passing the difficult stage of patience.
Allah being the Al-Rehman and Ar-Raheem has revealed a spectacular Dua to relieve the energy draining emotions. Let’s take a look, as to how the aforementioned dua has reached us.
Asbab al-nuzul: This dua is a part of Surah Yusuf. This Surah is also known as the Surah of the saddened. It is considered as the ‘polyfax’ of the distressed. It was revealed in ‘Aam-ul-Huzn’ (year of grief), the year in which the Holy Prophet’s wife Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) and his uncle Abu Talib died one after another. Also the incident of Ta’if happened. These three incidents happened within the two month period leaving the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) extremely crestfallen and grieved. Abu Talib was a protecting shield for Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) against Quraish. His death meant that hardships on Sahaba had increased manifold. In this crucial time, the companions of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) came and requested him to tell them the stories of previous ummati who withstood the tests of time with great patience and endurance. Elevating this request to the Darjah of acceptance Allah Subhan o taala revealed Surah Yusuf to soothe the hearts of Muslims. (Qadhi, 2011)
Hence, this Surah in general and ayah 86 in particular plays a great role in calming the distressed heart of a momin.
Background: When Hazrat Yaqub A.S. was extremely grieved on the loss of both of his youngest sons. His other sons mocked him that you are always speaking about Yusuf. Showing his emotional independence and not begging for sympathy, he replied that I am only complaining to Allah and not to you people. (Quran 12: 84-86)
ALLAH liked this faith and tawakkul so much that he made it a part of Quran and an exemplary dua for the good-doers and Sabreen.
My two cents:
No matter how cautiously we spend our lives. No big deal if we spend a huge amount of time planning our lives and executing accordingly. Some disappointment is still inescapable in life time. Surviving in such situations requires dependence on someone who is way larger than one’s own existence. Telling the same story to multiple people won’t help. Telling the same story multiple times to single person would only make him fed up. If he is a well-wisher, talking about the same incident again and again would only sadden them and bruise their hearts even more.
There comes a point when people straight away tell the aggrieved that enough! How many times are you going to share this? But the heart still wants some consolation, some empathy, some love. I have personally experienced this that when it is impossible to mend the heart. When it feels that the earth has fallen of its axis. The sun will never shine again. Your acquaintances and loved ones both are not ready to listen to you but you still feel to converse with someone.
At this point, just recite:
once. I can assure you that the weight of your worries even if it equates the mass of the Jupiter will be lifted down from your heart. It actually feels that your emotions are being held by two calming and sincere hands. The mind relaxes
within seconds and the heart rejuvenates instantly. It is at this point, one cannot help but say, indeed Allah you are the one who loves His creation 70 times more a mother loves her child.
